Where Summer Traditions Turn Into Lifelong Memories

For many families, the Alameda County Fair is a place filled with familiar traditions, favorite foods and shared memories. For one local woman, it also became the place where an unexpected moment led to a lifelong love story.

What began as a typical summer visit filled with family activities and Fair traditions eventually turned into a relationship that has lasted more than 40 years.

A Family Tradition Rooted in the Fair

Growing up in a large family, summer at the Alameda County Fair was always something to look forward to. Each year brought favorite stops and familiar experiences that became part of family tradition.

Soft tacos, hot cinnamon rolls, frozen bananas and visits to see the farm animals were must-do activities that marked every trip to the Fair.

Her mother, Sherry, was also deeply connected to the Fair through the baking competitions. Each year, she entered homemade breads, cakes and sweet rolls into the contests, often earning top honors and proudly taking home Best of Fair ribbons.

Inspired by their mother’s passion, she and her sister entered the junior baking division as well. The kitchen was always busy in the days leading up to Fair entries, and those early experiences helped create lasting connections to the Fairgrounds.

The Fair also became a place to learn and give back. Through 4-H, she volunteered to bake cakes on site for hungry guests to purchase. Later, she participated in cooking demonstrations for Fair visitors who gathered to watch, learn and take a break from walking the grounds.

By the time she reached adulthood, the Fair was already a familiar and meaningful part of her life.

The Day Everything Changed

One summer day at the Fair, something unexpected happened.

While walking through one of the exhibit halls, she noticed a young man carrying a HUGE stuffed animal. The oversized prize immediately caught her attention, but she did not think much of it at the time.

Later that same day, while watching a cooking demonstration, she heard a voice from behind her ask, “What do you think about those pans?”

She turned around and realized it was the same guy she had seen earlier with the HUGE stuffed animal.

They began talking and quickly became so engaged in conversation that they disrupted the salesperson leading the demonstration. Eventually, they were asked to be quiet or leave.

Instead of ending the conversation, they walked out together and sat on the steps nearby.

Curious about the stuffed animal, she asked how he had won it. Without hesitation, he offered to go back and win one for her too.

As they prepared to leave, he asked for her phone number.

The rest, as they say, is history.
