What Are Outriders?
At every track you visit, you’ll find outriders. These expert riders are tasked with supervising the day’s races and making sure that jockeys and horses all stay safe. They help to guide horses to the starting gate. On the rare occasion that a horse becomes loose, it is the outrider’s job to catch it and get it under control. Many of their steeds are retired thoroughbreds themselves.
The partnership between outrider and horse is crucial, as the outrider must trust in their mount while they attempt to grab a loose horse.
Outriders are on the track during morning workouts as well. They keep order in the chaos, pick up loose horses and help stop runaway horse with riders. They also help with crazy horses. Outriders have saved me on several occasions and play a crucial role in horse racing. ❤️ to the outriders!
